Walsall iTree Flyer

Places Walsall
This was a sample survey, involving teams of volunteers and trained surveyors entering public spaces and private gardens to measure the trees in these sample plots. They were able to identify what was there, the size of the trees and what condition they were in. Data was then put through a software model called i-Tree.
Key findings
- The Black Country’s urban forest performs well in terms of its structure with a wide variety of species.
- No species exceeds 10% of the population, which is a good indication that the urban forest will be resilient to pests and diseases.
- The most prominent threats are Ash dieback, Asian Longhorned beetle, Ramorum disease, Phytophthora Kernoviae.
- There is a good distribution of semi mature and mature trees, but there are very few senescent trees.
- Managing trees to ensure they reach their full potential, namely in their size, is important as older trees deliver more benefits.
- Planting of young trees is also required to replace dying or removed trees and to enhance the urban forest.
